Joel Mandelbaum has degrees from Harvard, Brandeis, and Indiana, where he wrote the first dissertation on microtonality in 1961. His teachers included Angela Diller, Helen Grant Baker, Walter Piston, Luigi Dallapiccola, Irving Fine, Aaron Copland, Bernhard Heiden, and Tibor Kozma. Former Director of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College CUNY, where he continues to teach as an Emeritus, he is the composer of numerous song cycles and several operas, including most notably The Dybbuk  and The Village, slated for its European premiere in Hamburg next year.
