Meng-Sheng Shen, Piano

Hailed by The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)as a musician performing with “remarkable sensitivity and clarity” and praised by The Enquire (Cincinnati) as the “Best Chopin” performer, Taiwanese pianist Meng-Sheng Shen fascinates his audiences with his insightful eloquence and ingenious virtuosity. Gold Medalist of the Taipei International Chopin Piano Competition and First Prize winner of the Serge & Olga Koussevitzky Young Artist Awards, Mr. Shen recently won top prizes in the Juilliard’s Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto Competition and Cincinnati World Piano Competition. Since making his concerto debut at the age of 10 with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Shen has been a featured soloist with all major orchestras in Taiwan. In 2013, Mr. Shen joined the celebrated New Juilliard Ensemble (founded and directed by Joel Sachs). His upcoming concert engagements include concerto performance with Tulsa Symphony Orchestra (opening concert of 2014-15 seasons), performance with the New Juilliard Ensemble at Lincoln Center (Peter Jay Sharp Theater), chamber music recital (“Taiwanese Piano Trio”) at Alice Tully Hall, and a concert tour in Taiwan. 

Mr. Shen made his recital debut at the prestigious Taipei National Concert Hall, and has since performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Taiwan, at venues such as Alice Tully Hall and Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, Aronoff Center for the Arts in Cincinnati, Van Trease Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, Cleveland Museum of Art, Squires Recital Hall in Cleveland, Benedict Music Tent in Aspen, Stephens Recital Hall in Idyllwild, Steinway Hall and Roy Barnett Recital Hall in Vancouver, Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw, Concert Hall in Goslar, Rathaus of Sulzbach-Rosenberg, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Chunghsing Concert Hall and Hsin Min Concert Hall in Taiwan.  

Mr. Shen has been invited to perform in numerous music festivals, including Aspen Music Festival, Music Festival at The Banff Centre, Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, International Piano Masterclasses in Prague, International Concert Working Weeks in Goslar, InterHarmony International Music Festival in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Music Festival and Tunghai University International Music Festival in Taiwan. An artist of Taiwanese Cultural Minister, Mr. Shen was invited to give two all-Chopin recitals in 2010 to celebrate the composer’s bicentennial birthday. 

Gold Medalist (with audience prize) of the Crescendo International Music Award in Tulsa, Mr. Shen has also received first prizes from Cleveland Lee University Piano Competition, Vancouver CIBC Youth Piano Competition, Yamaha International Piano Competition, Taiwan National Music Competition and Kawai International Piano Competition. He was a finalist in Juilliard’s Gina Bachauer Piano Competition (2011 and 2012), and a diploma recipient in the Los Angeles International Liszt Piano Competition, Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition and Cleveland International Piano Competition. 

Mr. Shen’s previous teachers include Robert Silverman and Tzong-Kai Kuo. He is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree in piano performance at The Juilliard School with Adele Marcus Piano Scholarship and Susan W. Rose Piano Fellowship, under the tutelage of Jerome Lowenthal and Yoheved Kaplinsky.
